Earlier this year Live Performance Australia (LPA) terminated the Agreement Governing the Use of Foreign Artists in Live Theatre in Australia without prior discussion. Australian performers are invited to attend members’ rmeetings in Sydney and Melbourne to hear about the campaign so far and to consider the next steps.
More than 40 working casts have passed resolutions expressing their shock and deep disappointment at LPA’s decision to walk away from this long standing industry agreement. Equity accepts that all agreements need to keep pace with changes in our industry and to be subject to update as necessary. But members are telling us that they do not want a situation where there are potentially no limitations on the use of overseas actors on Australian stages. Regrettably LPA has to date refused to discuss a new agreement.
Over the past two months Equity has met with general managers, artistic directors and producers from the subsidised and commercial companies to exchange views. While many of these discussions have been positive, performers now need to take a strong collective stand to ensure that the producers and companies come back to the table and resolve this issue in a collegial manner.
