The Equity Foundation is thrilled to announce that Anne Phelan is the recipient of the 2016 Equity Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Foxtel.

Since proudly joining Equity in 1968, Anne has been a continuous presence on Australian stages and screens, starring in some of the country’s most beloved productions. As well as roles in Prisoner, Bellbird, Neighbours and everything in between, Anne is a passionate activist, campaigner, fundraiser and mentor.

On stage, Anne has appeared in over 50 shows. She is the patron of Positive Women Victoria, a member of Actors for Refugees, has helped raise money for The Choir of Hard Knocks and the Victorian Actors Benevolent Trust. In 2007 Anne was awarded an Order of Australia for her services to the arts and to the community and is the winner of two AFI Television Awards.

Equity president Chloe Dallimore says Anne was nominated for this prestigious honour by her performer peers because of her impressive career as well as her outstanding record as a humanitarian.

“Anne is not only one of Australia’s most recognisable and popular performers, she has also demonstrated a lifetime’s commitment to social justice – standing up for what she believes in both publically and also quietly, tirelessly behind the scenes. She has been an enduring activist with the Victorian Actors Benevolent Trust and Oz Showbiz Cares/Equity Fights AIDS,” says Dallimore.

“Anne epitomises what the Equity Lifetime Achievement Award is all about; recognising those special performers who inspire us with not only with their careers but also with their outstanding contribution to our industry as whole.”

The Equity Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2009 with the generous support of Foxtel. Past recipients include Peter Carroll, late Bob Hornery, Maggie Dence, Ron Haddrick, Jill Perryman, Kevan Johnston, Toni Lamond AM and Grant Page.

Bruce Meagher, Foxtel’s group director of corporate affairs said: “Foxtel firmly believes it’s important to honour the outstanding contribution made by artists to our industry. Once again, we are proud to support Equity’s Lifetime Achievement Award and we are thrilled to recognise Anne Phelan’s considerable contribution to the Australian stage and screen. It's particularly pleasing that one of her many television roles was in Prisoner, which Foxtel has now reimagined as Wentworth.”

Anne was nominated by Australian performers and chosen by the Equity National Performers Committee. She will be honoured at an awards ceremony in Melbourne in December.
