on .

The Equity Foundation is thrilled to announce that New Zealand performers Emily McKenzie and Freya Milner have been awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Atlantic Acting School in New York City.

Atlantic Winners 2017

The industry judging panel was so overwhelmed by the calibre of applicants they decided to award two scholarships instead of one. The New Zealand Film Commission has generously offered to contribute $NZ5,000 towards the expenses of each recipient.

Mary McCann, executive director of the Atlantic Acting School and founding member of the Atlantic Theater Company, says: "What an amazing second year! With so much talent it makes it very difficult to select a scholarship recipient. We are thrilled to invite both Emily McKenzie and Freya Milner to our Spring Comprehensive program in 2017. We were impressed by both of their talent, accomplishments, and dedication to creating new work and fostering future generations of artists through their participation. We are confident that both will bring so much to the program's ensemble and that they will both be wonderful representatives of Practical Aesthetics, the Atlantic Technique in their respective communities”

The industry judging panel says: “In selecting Freya and Emily we are confident that we are sending two of our strongest, most original emerging talents. There is no doubt they will go on to enrich the NZ screen industry and we look forward to watching their progress.”

McKenzie and Milner will undertake the six-week Spring Comprehensive (valued at $US2,500) from May 22 – June 30, 2017. Founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy, the Atlantic has the only conservatory program in the world that offers in-depth training in Mamet and Macy’s unique and influential approach to acting: Practical Aesthetics.

McKenzie says: "I can't begin to describe how ecstatic and thankful I am to have been given this opportunity to study at a renowned school like Atlantic. Thank you Equity, the NZ film commission and Atlantic Acting School for this scholarship, it means the world to me. New York here I come!"

Milner says: “I feel enormously privileged to have the opportunity to be amongst the immense creative talent at the Atlantic, and in a city as vibrant as New York. I cannot wait be a part of the energy of creation.”

The Atlantic Scholarship is an initiative of the Equity Foundation, the professional development arm of Equity New Zealand.
