With a career in film, television, radio and theatre spanning seven decades and a passion for assisting performers in need, Ron Haddrick’s name came up time and time again when Australian performers were asked to nominate and select the winner of the 2012 Equity Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by FOXTEL.

Equity president Simon Burke said: “Ron perfectly epitomises what this award is all about – honouring those inspiring performers who have spent literally a lifetime combining a phenomenal career with generous leadership and selfless mentorship.

Ron’s astonishing body of work, dating back to 1946, and his commitment to the NSW Actors Benevolent Fund – which raises funds for performers who are unable to work due to injury, illness or disability – makes him an ideal recipient of this year’s Equity Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Lucy Durack can’t believe her luck, scoring the lead in another hit musical. She speaks with Lizzie Franks about her current role in Legally Blonde, the show that has taken Broadway and the West End by storm

Lucy Durack says she “absolutely fell in love” with Legally Blonde the Musical when she saw it for the first time on Broadway. Little did Durack know that a few years later she would land the coveted lead role in the Australian production. Based on the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, the musical was the surprise hit of Broadway when it premiered in 2007 and is now in its third sold-out year on the West End. It has won a swag of awards, including the prestigious Best New Musical award at last year’s Oliviers.

An impressive number of Aussie actors are flying high after this year’s US pilot season. Lizzie Franks reports on who they are and how they got there

Most Australian actors are familiar with the craziness that is ‘pilot season’, either through personal experience or the war stories they’ve heard from friends. Sleeping on couches, traffic gridlock, exhaustion, nerves and angst are some of the defining traits of the whole ordeal.

Pilot season is that time of year (usually mid-January to mid-April) when the major US networks – ABC, CBS, NBC, The CW and Fox – ask writers, producers and studios to cast and produce a prototype of the first episode of a television series. Although they can be filmed any time of year, most are produced during pilot season. So it’s no wonder actors from all over the world flock to Los Angeles to try their luck, hoping for their big break.
