Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Creatives

The Equity Foundation is pleased to offer an upcoming Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course specifically for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander actors, crew and creatives who would like to deepen their skills and knowledge in this important area.

During this Mental Health First Aid course participants will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid is just as important as physical First Aid in our industry and our community. Becoming a qualified Mental Health First Aider helps you help others!

This course will be free of charge. It will include a self-paced e-Learning component that you can complete at home online in your own time and a one-day online course hosted AJ Williams-Tchen on Oct 17, 2024.

ABOUT THE HOST:
AJ Williams-Tchen is an award-winning Aboriginal Social Worker with Wiradjuri cultural connection. He has been delivering MHFA workshops across Australia since 2007. As of July 2024, AJ has facilitated over 840 MHFA courses to over 9400 individuals. As well as being a Social Worker, AJ holds qualifications in nursing, youth work and First Nations health and well-being. With 35 years of demonstrated work history in Aboriginal education, employment, health and mental health, AJ understands the importance of closing the gaps that exist in the lives of Australia’s First Nations people. In 2023 AJ was awarded Social Worker of the Year in the Allied Health Awards. He was a 2024 nominee for Australian of the Year.

ABOUT THE COURSE:
Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait islander peoples often live with high levels of psychological distress due to the recognised gaps that exist with health, education, employment, child protection, justice, homelessness and family violence. The AMHFA courses looks at how social and emotional well-being impacts on an individual, helps you become aware of the signs and symptoms of mental illness, and provides strategies to offer assistance until you can get the person to professional help.

Course Component 1: A self-paced eLearning component (Begins Sept 4. Takes 7 hours to complete in own time)
Course Component 2: An Instructor-led one-day Zoom training sessionĀ  (Oct 17. 12pm-5pm).

FEE & APPLICATIONS:
This course is being run free of charge with the support of MEAA, the Equity Foundation and the Alliance of Australasian Performing Arts Benevolent Funds.
