The Equity Foundation is thrilled to announce that Queensland-based performer and recent QUT Acting Graduate Mia Foley has been awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Atlantic Acting School in New York City. Mia will attend the Spring Comprehensive program in New York City from May 19-June 27, 2025, with a cash prize of $AU10,000 to assist with her flights and accommodation.
Of Mia’s selection from more than 120 applicants, the independent industry judging panel said: “Mia demonstrated masterfulness in her work – a rousing blend of fearless openness, radiating presence, risk-taking, and boundless playfulness. Her artistry carries a depth and richness far beyond her years, driven by an undeniable passion and a clear sense of purpose. We are beyond excited to witness the further unfolding of her powerful instrument, impressive knowledge, and singular artistic voice. We cannot wait to see how this opportunity fuels her growth and amplifies the brilliance she brings to the craft”.
The industry judging panel was so overwhelmed by the calibre of applicants they decided to award two scholarships instead of one. Performer, teacher, director and writer Julian Curtis has been awarded a partial scholarship to the attend the Atlantic’s Summer Intensive program in New York City from July 1-August 9, 2025.
Of Julian’s selection, the judges said: “The abundance of talent made this year’s selection process incredibly difficult, but thanks to the generosity of The Atlantic School, we are honoured to extend a second scholarship to Julian Curtis, a standout artist whose work is deeply truthful, layered and shimmering with comedic panache. Julian demonstrates an unwavering commitment to his craft and true leadership—not only in his own work, but also in his dedication to sharing his artistic journey with others. We are excited to witness Julian take the next bold step in his creative evolution.”
Mary McCann, executive director of the Atlantic Acting School and founding member of the Atlantic Theater Company, said: “What a phenomenal year it has been! We were truly inspired by the extraordinary talent among our applicants, making the selection process both exciting and challenging. With great enthusiasm, we proudly welcome Mia Foley to our Spring Comprehensive and Julian Curtis to our Summer Intensive for 2025. Their exceptional artistry, steadfast dedication, and passion for the work set them apart. We wholeheartedly congratulate them and are confident they will enrich our program ensembles while serving as outstanding ambassadors for Practical Aesthetics, embodying the spirit of the Atlantic Technique in their communities.”
The Atlantic Acting School, founded in 1987 by playwright David Mamet and actor William H. Macy, operates as both a private conservatory and an undergraduate program in conjunction with the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. It has the only conservatory program in the world that offers in-depth training in Mamet and Macy’s unique and influential approach to acting: Practical Aesthetics, the Atlantic Technique.
