Synopsis

Join Lisa Dallinger in this workshop for an opportunity to investigate the Multicultural London English accent. Have you ever thought about the kind of dialect that people like Dizzee Rascal or Stormzy use in their speech and music? This is what might be known as ‘Multicultural London English’ or ‘MLE’ for short. Having emerged in the 1980s, in parts of inner London where there was a relatively high level of immigration, MLE tends to incorporate elements of the traditional East End Cockney dialect as well as speech features of the large immigrant groups in the city. Despite this, MLE is now spoken by inner-city Londoners of many ethnicities and ages, and in particular younger speakers. This session will aim to unpack the accent further, as well as offer practical exploration and samples of some of the accent’s key features. Please note: This livestream will take place at 12pm Australian Eastern Standard Time and 2pm NZ Time. You will be sent a Zoom link after registering.
