Synopsis

Equity member Monica Sayers will chat to producer Ian Collie (The Twelve, Rake, Jack Irish) and director Daniel Nettheim ( Broadchurch, Line of Duty) about what goes on behind the scenes of a screen production before actors are cast, what is involved in the producing and directing side of things on a day to day basis, what are some of the differences between how shows are made in Australia and overseas, how they work with actors, the best ways to navigate the actor/producer and actor/director relationships, self taping, zoom auditions, rehearsing, protocols on set and much more. There will be plenty of time for audience questions. Please note: This is event is at 12pm AEDT (Sydney/Melbourne time) and 2pm NZ time.

    Ian Collie is the Founder and Producer of Easy Tiger Productions. One of Australia’s most highly regarded producers, Ian’s credits include Foxtel’s latest drama series The Twelve, five seasons of the multi award winning series Rake starring Richard Roxburgh, two seasons and three telemovies based on Peter Temple’s Jack Irish book series starring Guy Pearce, five seasons of the popular comedy drama Doctor Doctor (aka The Heart Guy), the mini- series Sunshine starring Anthony LaPaglia and The Principal starring Alex Dimitriades and Aden Young, and the adaption of Peter Temple’s The Broken Shore starring Don Hany and Claudia Karvan. Ian produced the feature film Saving Mr Banks starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. His documentary programs include Lindy Chamberlain: The True Story, Australia on Trial, Whatever: The Science of Teens, The Making of Modern Australia, Rogue Nation, The Catalpa Rescue, A Case for the Coroner, Art House, The Real Mary Poppins, and The Original Mermaid. Ian is currently producing Colin from Accounts starring Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall for Binge and the documentary series Family Court Killer for Network Ten.
  • Daniel Nettheim

    Daniel Nettheim is an award-winning director of films and TV drama who divides his time between Australia and the UK. Most recently Daniel was set up director on ABC series The Messenger for Lingo Pictures, as well as setting up Foxtel legal drama The Twelve for Easy Tiger. Prior to that Daniel directed The Tourist starring Jamie Dornan for BBC1, Stan and HBO Max, released in 2022. The Tourist was a huge success locally and internationally, breaking audience records for the BBC iPlayer. It won Best Series at the 2022 Monte Carlo TV Festival and was also nominated for a TV Week Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Miniseries. In 2020 Daniel was set up director on the final season of Line of Duty, the BBCs highest rating drama of the past two decades. Other UK television work includes BAFTA nominated seasons of Doctor Who; Broadchurch; Humans; Ripper Street; Whitechapel; and Glue.  Daniel was set up director on Harlan Coben’s Safe and directed multiple episodes of the YA fantasy series Cursed, both for Netflix.  Daniel’s US credits include Ash Vs. Evil Dead and Hunters. In Australia his recent credits include the final Logie nominated season of Doctor Doctor; Harrow; Jack Irish and political thriller Secret City.  Daniel’s feature The Hunter, starring Willem Dafoe, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011. It received worldwide theatrical distribution and screened at dozens of major festivals. The film was nominated for 14 AACTA Awards, including Best Director.
  • Monica Sayers

    Monica Sayers is a proud Australian born Chinese artist working as an actor, voiceover, yoga teacher and DJ. Having studied at Actors Centre Australia & ATYP, Monica continued her training at NIDA, graduating with a Bachelor in Dramatic Arts in 2004. Over the years she has worked extensively across different mediums including TV’s - The Messenger, The Unlisted, Rake, Love My Way, Last Man Standing, All Saints, The Royal (UK) and The Clinic (IRE). She has featured in countless commercials, corporate training videos, short films and voiceovers. In 2022 Monica recorded her first audiobook Raised By Wolves, an autobiography by food and drink editor/presenter Jess Ho, accounting her life in the hospitality industry and growing up in a migrant family in suburban Melbourne. Monica’s main theatre highlights are Romeo and Juliet (Bell Shakespeare) Chimerica and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Sydney Theatre Co) Hay Fever (Melbourne Theatre Company) Moon Rabbit Rising (Belvoir 25A) Let The Right One In (Darlinghurst Theatre) Gentlemen Prefer Blondes the musical (Hayes Theatre) Monica is now moving into directing pieces for stage and screen. Last year she acted and co-directed a short film In A Moment, a Seb Berry production. She stepped into assistant director and dramaturg for the Diploma Stage and Screen course Showcase, helmed by Darren Yap, and in February this year, Monica directed an excerpt from Eric Jiang’s play Noodle Salad, to celebrate Lunar New Year, produced by Slanted Theatre and Nation Theatre of Parramatta part of Dragon Tales. Following on, Monica directed two pieces at Nida - a circus themed cabaret and a concert style performance with the diploma students. Monica is a successful applicant in the 2024 Staging the World Mentorship Program by National Theatre of Parramatta, working closely with international director Mina Morita from Crowded Fire Theatre Company San Francisco. This will take place over two weeks in September and October.
