Synopsis

What is this accent?: With the call for actors with Middle Eastern heritage on the recognition and increase, Gurkiran has curated a Middle Eastern accent workshop focusing on the key sounds in an attempt to honour the countries considered Middle Eastern; Afghanistan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United States of Arab Emirates and Yemen.  Please note: While this workshop has been purpose built for any actors with any Middle Eastern and South Asian heritages in order to address the work appropriately, you do not have to have a Middle Eastern or South Asian background to take part. This livestream is open to all Equity actors. What will be covered in this workshop?: What may be considered a “Standard” or “General” Arabic Accent. This sound set offers a fluidity to actors to play with in auditions and jobs. When more nuance and appropriate detail is needed regarded the story as well as geography, please seek further dialect support via the production. Prep: Have fun listening to authentic speakers based in any of the Middle Eastern regions whom speak fluent English. Please note that this does not mean that their accents are English but that their knowledge of the English language is fluent whilst retaining the richness of their other languages especially Arabic. These features makes for an appropriate sound source. Please ensure to have:
  • A viewable screen to allow screen sharing.
  • Some paper and writing stationery, e.g. pencils, pens, colours, highlighters etc.
  • A short monologue you’re familiar with.
